At St. Walburg’s Hospital in rural southern Tanzania, thousands of patients are treated every month who would otherwise have no access to healthcare. The Artemed Stiftung supports the hospital in fulfilling this important task. Every month, we receive a detailed report from the hospital management about the activities and development of our cooperation. Here is the information for the month of April.

From the hospital:
The highlight of this month was definitely the Uhuru Torch award ceremony on April 11. The St. Walburg’s Hospital was awarded this honor due to the technical achievements of recent years, which were largely carried out through the hospital's cooperation with Artemed Stiftung . It was particularly pleasing that Elisabeth Kern, Managing Director of Artemed Stiftung, and a large team from the foundation were also able to attend this great day.
As in the previous month, malaria and diseases caused by high blood pressure were the most common diagnoses among patients in hospital. In the pharmaceutical sector, a solution was found for the first time to identify expired medicines and remove them from circulation while still guaranteeing a sufficient supply. In addition, courses were initiated for the further training of midwives and in the area of hygiene, which will hopefully start in May.
From our specialist groups:
Furthermore, various topics are discussed with the hygiene team in Germany via Zoom conferences and solutions are discussed in the event of problems. Josia, who has been responsible for hygiene at St. Walburg’s Hospital for some time now, has proven to be extremely competent and reliable in this regard.
Deployments:
As mentioned above, the new Managing Director of Artemed Stiftung Elisabeth Kern traveled to Nyangao with a team for the first time in April. This allowed her to get a first impression of the partner hospital and meet many of the colleagues working there. For her and the local team, the stay was thoroughly positive and everyone is looking forward to working together in the future.
Community Healthcare and Outreach project:
As part of the Community Healthcare project, 1296 children were vaccinated in April. During the weekly trips to the villages, a total of seven communities were visited and 945 small children were examined. In the process, 30 children were diagnosed with iron anemia and 104 with malnutrition. Thanks to the support of Sternstunden this year, these children were able to receive appropriate treatment in hospital and are now stable.
In addition, 37 women were screened for cervical cancer.
A total of 1046 residents took part in the presentations on nutrition. The workshops on gender equality held by the outreach project were similarly well attended.
