At the end of January, Dr. Silke Rausch, an anesthesiologist at the Artemed Clinic Munich South, spent a week and a half on a medical mission in Tanzania. During her trip, she also visited our scholarship recipients at the KCMC (Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre) in Moshi, located right at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Dr. Rausch met three of our dedicated doctors from Nyangao who are currently completing their residency training at the KCMC. Their progress is impressive and promises a lasting improvement in medical care in Nyangao:
-
Dr. Robert (Anesthesiology): He will complete his residency this summer. Starting in September, he will be the first full-time anesthesiologist working in Nyangao. This is a milestone for St. Walburg’s Hospital, as until now—as is often the case in Tanzania —only anesthesia nurses have been administering anesthesia independently there.
-
Dr. Oscar (Emergency Medicine) & Dr. Lucas (Surgery): Both will return to Nyangao as board-certified specialists in just under two years. At the end of last year, Dr. Oscar spent two weeks in Marburg, shadowing staff at the local hospital and gaining valuable insights into the German healthcare system (aswe reported).
-
Dr. Ngavalanga (Radiology): He is also currently in training and will join the team in three years (unfortunately, he was unable to attend the meeting).
This mission has once again demonstrated just how essential our scholarship program is. Training local medical professionals is the key to ensuring long-term, self-sustaining medical care in the region.
A big thank you to all the donors who make this training possible! Without your support, doctors like Dr. Robert and Dr. Oscar would not be able to afford to pursue their medical specializations.
Our next major goal is to expand the program and, in the future, also award scholarships to midwives. Qualified support throughout the birthing process is crucial to further reducing maternal and infant mortality in the region.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Silke Rausch for her tireless personal dedication!
