Many girls

Unterstrich_grau

September was a real 'girls' month' at our Mother and Child Center: with ten female babies, twice as many girls were born as boys!

It's a good thing that the United Nations recently (July 2, 2024) launched an appeal explicitly pointing out that women's rights in Myanmar increased support. Since the military coup in 2021, gender equality in the country has unfortunately also declined sharply. Women in particular suffer from food shortages, for example, as they go without food for their children and families. The appeal is primarily based on a report by UN rapporteur Tom Andrews, who points out the current poor situation of female society and other marginalized groups in his article. He writes "The international community must step up support for women, girls and LGBT people in Myanmar by working with local civil society organizations to provide humanitarian assistance tailored to the needs of the most vulnerable and funding programs for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. I have called on governments and donors to work with emerging governance structures, ethnic resistance organizations and civil society to ensure accountability for crimes against women, girls and LGBT people."

We hope that these calls will be heard in politics and society and do our part to ensure that the newborn girls have a good future ahead of them - and the boys too, of course!
