Empty streets in Bogale

Unterstrich_grau

Since August 16, the number of Covid-19 infections in Myanmar are rising rapidly. The country has now reached the fourth-highest infection rate in the whole of Southeast Asia. Two thirds of those infected are in Yangon, but the Irrawaddy Delta is now also affected. The first positive cases have been reported in Bogale. Irrawaddy River Doctors are therefore on heightened alert again. The Burmese Ministry of Health has once again imposed some drastic measures, including a curfew. The streets of Bogale are therefore empty. In addition, banks and stores have been closed and a strict travel ban is in place. No visas are currently being issued.

At present, the Irrawaddy River Doctors still have permission to drive their route as usual. We are in daily contact with the authorities so that we can react flexibly to any changes. The local hospital is now also preparing for the first cases of severe cases. Unfortunately, it is completely inadequately equipped with protective clothing and materials, so we have responded to requests and donated some equipment.
