At St. Walburg’s Hospital in rural southern Tanzania, thousands of patients who would otherwise have no access to healthcare are treated every month. The Artemed Stiftung the hospital in fulfilling this important mission. Every month, we receive a detailed report from the hospital administration on the activities and progress of our partnership. Current status St. Walburg’s Hospital
The long-awaited and much-needed solar panel system has been installed on the roof of St. Walburg's Hospital and now ensures a stable power supply (aswe reported).
Thanks to Dr. Kurt Bischofberger, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at St. Walburg’s Hospital received its own ultrasound machine St. Walburg’s Hospital of the year (aswe reported).
We are working together on a master plan to ensure that St. Walburg’s Hospital is equipped with the necessary infrastructure and facilities to meet future needs.
Operations
Dr. Kurt Bischofberger and Ulrike Bischofberger traveled to St. Walburg’s Hospital from late January through mid-February. Their work focused primarily on clinical duties, including numerous maternal and pediatric emergencies (aswe reported).
In May, the AI system for the radiological detection of TB, developed by Dr. Amir Bigdeli, was put into operation. Prof. Dr. Rainer Salfeld, Prof. Dr. Peter Schmieg, Joschua Hannemann, and Managing Director Kathrin Brosowski traveled Kathrin Brosowski Nyangao to finalize the master plan (modernization, renovation, and expansion of the hospital).
In July, Dr. Gernot Strube began assembling the Artejiko rocket stove. Sr. Dr. Ullamariam Hoffmann, Dr. Anna Borys, Annelie Siepmann, Michael Deininger, Dr. Sabine Werner, and Dr. Andreas Ziegler volunteered at St. Walburg’s Hospital the fields of surgery, internal medicine, pharmacy (aswe reported), and water technology.
In October, Ruth Handte joined the midwifery team for the second time (aswe reported), and Dr. Leonie Thum assisted in the obstetrics and gynecology department, where her tasks included training staff on how to use a new ultrasound machine and helping out in the delivery room.
From late November to mid-December, Dr. Kurt Bischofberger and Ulrike Bischofberger visited for the second time this year, primarily to provide training on the ultrasound machine they had donated (as previously reported).
Community Healthcare Outreach Project
Im Rahmen des Community Healthcare and Outreach Projektes konnten im Jahr 2025 bereits 1.747 Frauen und junge Mädchen auf Gebärmutterhalskrebs untersucht werden. Bei 4.400 Kleinkindern (< 5 Jahre) wurden Vorsorgeuntersuchungen durchgeführt. Dabei wurde bei 432 Kindern eine Mangelernährung festgestellt. 35 der Kinder befanden sich in einem kritischen Zustand. 130 der getesteten Kinder wiesen eine Anämie auf, die behandelt wurde. Darüber hinaus wurden bei den Besuchen und in der Klinik insgesamt 10.180 Kinder geimpft.
During visits to villages in the surrounding area, 5,293 women and 683 men attended various workshops and events where they learned about proper nutrition, domestic violence, and women’s rights.
