Valuable support for obstetrics in Tanzania

Leyla Schosser, midwife at St. Josefskrankenhaus at Artemed Kliniken in Freiburg, traveled to our partner clinic, St. Walburg’s Hospital in Nyangao, from 27 May to 3 July 2024. Together with midwife Leonie Zander(we reported), she supported the obstetrics team in various areas - from the admission and care of pregnant women to birth attendance and aftercare. She reported on her impressions on site live from Nyangao in an online meeting of the "Gynecology and Obstetrics" specialist group, a committee of committed midwives and gynecologists who work in the project on a voluntary basis.

One focus of her work was the analysis of data collection on pre-eclampsia, a dangerous complication during pregnancy, with the aim of identifying risk factors.

One experience that Leyla Schosser will remember in particular is attending the birth of a woman who was very surprised when she found out she was having twins. "After a brief moment of shock for everyone, she was then able to be very happy," reported Schosser.

On November 15, 2024, Leyla Schosser will present her experiences in Nyangao to a large audience at the Interprofessional Freiburg Symposium in the article "Obstetrics in Contrast". As the educational head of obstetrics, she will present valuable insights from her work in Tanzania. Obstetrics under such completely different conditions than here in Germany!
