At St. Walburg’s Hospital in rural southern Tanzania, thousands of patients are treated every month who would otherwise have no access to healthcare. The Artemed Stiftung supports the hospital in fulfilling this important task. Every month, we receive a detailed report from the hospital management about the activities and development of our cooperation. Here is the information for the month of August.

Current status St. Walburg’s Hospital

The budget for the next financial year was discussed at a quarterly meeting. Two main goals were agreed: to improve patient well-being and to further expand the hospital's services.

New washing machines were also installed, which now ensure better hygiene with hot water and will be used in particular for cleaning work clothes.

August was a very busy month, especially in the Outpatient Department: 1,160 people came in for high blood pressure alone. This corresponds to an increase of almost 19 % compared to the previous month.

At the end of August, 286 people were employed at the hospital - 153 women and 133 men. Two laboratory employees were also successfully found to work for the hospital on a voluntary basis.

Deployments

At the beginning of August, Sister Ullamariam Hoffmann, Angelika Hartmann and Barbara Theisen provided support. In addition, our project manager Benedikt Lenz and photographer Bernd Almus flew to Nyangao for a longer stay.

Community Healthcare and Outreach project:

During the visits to the villages in the area, 885 women and 72 men were taught about proper nutrition, domestic violence and women's rights at various workshops and events. In this way, the team learned of 18 cases of apparent violence against women. The women were referred to the Social Wellfare Officer, who is now working with them to find solutions.
