Every month, our project manager in Myanmar Su Myat Oo (called Su Su) sends us a summary of the activities at the Irrawaddy River Doctors and at the mother and child center. She also gives us an insight into the current situation in the politically unstable Myanmar and the impact this is having on the local people.
We reproduce her impressive report in the original English language. Here are her observations for the month of August.
Dear Dr.Veronika,
How are you and how is everyone?I hope you all are in good health. I am writing a monthly overview report for IRD August trip and activities. Our team had undergone the medical trip from 1st to 22nd August and provided our medical treatment to 11 villages.
The ICD result showed that there are 2628 of total patients. Among these patients, 95 are pregnant women taking AN care, a total 447 are boys and girls 1 to 14 years old who took medical check-ups and treatment while 28 in number are under one year old. We did screening test regarding comprehensive AN care to 67 pregnant women and a total of 196 patients did laboratory testing in this month. Furthermore, we provided deworming to 300 patients in total.
During this month, our team provided the general medical treatment such as Idiopathic Anaemia, Urinary Tract Infection and Rheumatic Fever according to the signs and symptoms of the patients and the laboratory test results. Furthermore, our team provided treatment for Non-Communicable Diseases such as Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Ischemic Heart Disease and more. In this month, we had random blood sugar testing to 562 patients whose BMI were above 23. And we also did Electrocardiogram (ECG) testing to 702 new patients who were above 40 years old. Furthermore, patients with acute respiratory tract infection, asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), migraine,etc. came to our boat to get treatment.
Our Dentist and our team provided dental treatment to 432 patients. We treated dental illness such as lip sores, oral candidiasis, aphthous ulcer, toothache due to dental caries, oral ulcer and tongue ulcer due to sharp edges of the teeth and growth in oral mucosa due to carcinoma. Different kind of fillings and further treatments were done.
The IRD team worked hard for the August trip and again hit the targets number in this month. As the crisis and the political situation in Myanmar, most people in villages couldn't effort for traveling to town and getting medicine. That's why the villagers are waiting the IRD mobile boat and patients number increase more and more(we reported).

I will always remember and pray for you. And we will try our best to help poor and needed people in future.
