At St. Walburg’s Hospital in rural southern Tanzania, thousands of patients are treated every month who would otherwise have no access to healthcare. The Artemed Stiftung supports the hospital in fulfilling this important task. Every month, we receive a detailed report from the hospital management about the activities and development of our cooperation. Here is the information for the month of May.

From the hospital:

At the end of May, Mr. Laiser, head of St. Walburg’s Hospital for the past four years, left the hospital. Efforts are currently underway to find a replacement for him.

In May, the so-called 'workers day' was also celebrated, during which awards were presented for outstanding work by hospital staff, among other things.

The main causes of hospitalization are still malaria and hypertension. The 249 births recorded by the clinic in May are really pleasing.

From our specialist groups:

We are currently working with the hygiene team in Tanzania to organize and finance hygiene training for selected local staff.

Deployments:

In May, Dr. Kristina Petri, assistant doctor for paediatrics in Starnberg, Dr. Bettina Henning from the Klinik III. Orden and urologist Dr. Jana Wiese (Loretto Hospital Freiburg) were on assignment in Tanzania. Each of them had specific tasks to take care of; together they also had the task of further developing the hygiene measures on site.(We reported).

Community Healthcare and Outreach project:

As part of the Community Healthcare project, 1166 children were vaccinated in May. During the weekly trips to the villages, a total of eight communities were visited and 550 small children were examined. Iron anemia was detected in 40 children and malnutrition in 72. Four of these had very severe malnutrition.

In addition, 188 women were screened for cervical cancer; a truly remarkable number.

A total of 546 residents took part in the presentations on nutrition. The workshops on gender equality held by the outreach project were similarly well attended.
