Gardening project in full swing!

Unterstrich_grau

Last year (2022), we were very lucky to be selected as one of the 24 projects supported by the 24 GOOD DEEDS Advent calendar: Our "Gardening Project" was hidden behind door "9" - you can find out what has since become of door 9 in the report:

In our gardening project, the "good deed" is that almost 1,500 families from the Lindi region of Tanzania are given the opportunity to grow typical local fruit and vegetables in a garden in front of their huts. This will enable mothers, who are primarily responsible for providing for their families in this region, to prevent malnutrition and the associated health and social problems. This is preceded by educational programs for the families on nutrition and horticulture, offered by local experts.

With the help of the good deed, the necessary supply of seeds (okra, spinach, tomato, eggplant, watermelon), seedlings (mango, orange, lemon, mandarin, guava) and gardening tools can now be provided. The plants are selected according to availability, nutritional value, vitamin content and sustainability. Cultivation of offshoots, for example, enables cultivation over several years.

Over the past few weeks, we have started ordering and purchasing seedlings and seeds, which are now being distributed to the families: Mango and papaya seedlings, eggplant and okra seeds, lemon and orange trees have been delivered to Nyangao. In addition, an area of over one hectare near our partner hospital St. Walburg’s Hospital was converted into arable land. In addition to the small family gardens, fruit and vegetables can now be grown on this land. The gardens are also used for training purposes.

We are already looking forward to seeing the first pictures of the many seeds starting to sprout, being awakened to new life and ensuring many healthy and happy children's lives.

More information and background on the project can be found at 24 GUTE TATEN.
