In St. Walburg`s Hospital in rural southern Tanzania, thousands of patients are treated every month who would otherwise have no access to healthcare. The Artemed Stiftung supports the hospital in fulfilling this important task. Every month, we receive a detailed report from the hospital management about the activities and development of our cooperation. Here is the information for the month of April.

M.A.T.E. Outreach on the ground:
In April, the two midwives Nurith Froevel and Laura Ziemke and the gynaecologist Dr Kathleen Winkel were on a medical mission on site. The team's task was mainly to analyse the situation in obstetrics and to make recommendations for both training and acquisitions. It became apparent that the procedures in obstetrics are very different from the current standard and that both medical and hygienic training is urgently needed for the benefit of the women and babies.
From our specialist groups:
The hygiene team at Artemed Stiftung is very active in cooperation with the hygiene team in Nyangao. St. Walburg`s Hospital in Nyangao. Once again, there was an exchange via Zoom, in which the topics of laundry, hand hygiene, laboratory and knowledge transfer were discussed.
The technical team made sure that numerous technical materials, including a new server, were transported to Tanzania with the participants. The new server was set up remotely. Since then, the digital hospital management system has been working without any crashes.
Infrastructure and acquisitions
For some months now, the physiotherapy department in Nyangao has had a young and well-qualified manager in Jackson. The number of patients is high, sometimes the young man looks after 4 patients at the same time. In order for him to be able to do his job well, the 50-year-old department was renovated and newly equipped with treatment couches and some equipment after consultation with Benedikt Lenz. Mr Lenz, who is a physiotherapist in Germany, was on site in February 2022 to get an idea of the situation.
After the water pump for the only borehole in Nyangao broke down in December 2021, leaving the hospital and the whole village without water for 12 days, some measures were taken to increase water security. Firstly, the completely porous water tank was replaced (see pictures below). Secondly, the pump was repaired and another water hole was drilled for safety. However, the work for this is still ongoing.
Community Health Project
In April, 4 new villages were added to the Community Health Project: Utimbura, Nagáka, Mawilo and Mpenda. It is a challenge to visit the villages in the rainy season as the roads are in such a bad condition and the car keeps getting stuck in holes.
235 mothers with children under 5 years of age were trained in the villages on the topics of baby and child nutrition, hygiene, clean water and healthy cooking. In addition, all children were screened for malnutrition and critical cases were hospitalised. The project was also received gratefully and with joy in the new villages
