Irrawaddy River Doctors in the refugee camp

The fighting between the Burmese government and the separatist Islamist militia of the Rohingya minority has flared up again in Rakhine State. The conflict between the Burmese military and the so-called Arakan Army has been going on for over a year now. The guerrilla group is fighting for the establishment of its own independent state based on Sharia law. Many people from the region are affected by the conflict and have fled to other parts of the country. One member of parliament put the number at more than 100,000, fleeing from the fighting but also from the destruction left behind by the war. The Myo ethnic group, which is also based in Rakhine State, is one of those affected. Several hundred people have fled to safety in a refugee camp near Yangon and are now also struggling to survive there under very difficult conditions.

The Irrawaddy River Doctors were asked to help the refugees and provide them with medical care. Our doctors and nurses therefore packed up their equipment and medicines and set off again. Hardly any other mission has taken such an emotional toll on them, and the whole team was deeply affected by the fate of the people there. Our employee Su Su captured some impressions with her cell phone camera:
