Help for obstetrics in Tanzania

Kurt Bischofberger has been a committed supporter of the Artemed Stiftung for many years. He traveled to our Tanzania project for the first time in 2022. After another visit in the fall of 2023 (we reported), he returned to St. Walburg’s Hospital in Nyangao at the beginning of 2025. As with his previous assignments, he was accompanied by his wife Ulrike Bischofberger, a trained nurse.

This third assignment for the specialist in gynecology and obstetrics was particularly challenging: almost at the same time as his arrival, the two ultrasound machines at St. Walburg's Hospital suddenly broke down due to the high daily demand and many years of use. Even for an experienced obstetrician like him, the limited diagnostics were a great test of endurance. Despite the difficult circumstances, he operated on numerous patients and supported the Tanzanian team with full commitment.

Thanks to his generous donation at the end of last year (we reported), urgently needed examination monitors, birthing beds and other essential equipment could be purchased for the department. During his visit, Bischofberger was able to see for himself that the equipment had been successfully put into operation and was delighted with its extensive use.

In addition to technical improvements, he also emphasizes the need for targeted further training, particularly in the area of neonatal resuscitation. Know-how still needs to be built up in order to help reduce infant mortality in the long term. This is where the Artemed Stiftung can provide valuable support in collaboration with the specialist group for gynecology and obstetrics. Like his colleague Dr. Titania Eberle (we reported), he also praised Dr. Philipo, the local doctor in charge, for his dedicated and competent work.

A particular highlight of his assignment was the final dinner with his Tanzanian colleagues. "It's always really nice. There is laughter and singing. The Tanzanians live in the here and now, it's pure joie de vivre. The long journey to Nyangao is worth it for that alone," reports Bischofberger.

In order to once again guarantee safe diagnostics for pregnant women and thus avoid risks for mother and child, the Friends of the Artemed Stiftung have appealed for financial support for a new ultrasound machine for the gynecology and obstetrics department at St. Walburg’s Hospital . Every contribution helps to make the purchase possible for the hospital.
