Two wells and both pose St. Walburg’s Hospital enormous challenges. Both wells supply water with such a high salt content that it is unsuitable for sterilizing medical instruments. The pumps run around the clock, but regularly break down and pump sand, which damages the filters. What's more, neither the level of the groundwater table nor the hospital's exact water consumption are known. The water bought in from the village is so heavily contaminated with germs that the measuring device brought along could no longer display accurate values.
When it comes to water, St. Walburg's Hospital is "on fire" in every nook and cranny and requires extensive technical expertise! Fortunately, Artemed Stiftung has the active support of Michael Deininger (we already reported on him in 2019 and elsewhere). The water specialist from Schondorf traveled to Nyangao for the first time in the summer of 2024 to support the Tanzania project of Artemed Stiftung - we thank him very much for his commitment!
Based on his comprehensive inventory, a roadmap has now been drawn up for the long-term improvement of the water problems at St. Walburg's Hospital.
- Installation of water meters: These should help to better analyze water consumption and at the same time raise awareness for the sustainable use of water.
- Commissioning of two reverse osmosis systems: they enable the contaminated water to be purified so that it can be used for medical purposes in future.
- Expert advice for the master plan's water system: As part of the hospital master plan (we reported), he is already providing support to ensure a suitable water supply in the future.
Michael Deininger will also return to Nyangao in 2025 to drive these measures forward and monitor progress.
A stable and clean water supply is not only a cornerstone for medical care, but also essential for the smooth operation of the entire hospital. The support of experts like Michael Deininger shows how important it is to tackle all structural problems that are fundamental to the continued existence of the hospital.
With his expertise and commitment, Michael Deininger makes a significant contribution to ensuring that St. Walburg’s Hospital is able to meet the ever-increasing challenges of water supply - and thus remains a reliable point of contact for the people in the region in the future.
