Progress in obstetrics in Nyangao

At the end of last year, Titania Eberle traveled to our Tanzania project in Nyangao for the third time. The specialist in gynecology and obstetrics focused on the further development of obstetrics.

Compared to their last assignment two years ago, clear professional and hygienic improvements are visible. "The midwives are doing well and a lot has changed for the better professionally," reports Eberle. In order to further promote this progress, a targeted further training project is planned to provide selected specialists in gynecology and obstetrics with further qualifications and establish guideline-compliant processes.

Eberle was particularly impressed by Dr. Philipo, a young, dedicated doctor who already operates routinely and adheres strictly to medical guidelines. During her stay, she accompanied him and the team on ward rounds and in the delivery room. This gave her valuable insights into the work processes and enabled her to provide impetus for diagnostics and birth processes. Another pleasing development was the increased awareness of the issue of pre-eclampsia within the team - a decisive step for the safety of mother and child. Pregnancy toxicosis is potentially life-threatening for the mother and the unborn Baby. There is a need for optimization - also due to a lack of technical resources - particularly in the monitoring and interpretation of the child's heart rate during birth.

The best moments of her work were the moments after the births: "It's always nice when everyone - children and mothers - are doing well." Titania Eberle's findings are incorporated into the regular meetings of the gynecology specialist group in order to ensure long-term progress together. Together with the team at St. Walburg's Hospital, the Artemed Stiftung has already launched numerous initiatives to reduce maternal and child mortality. Continuous measures are required to achieve sustainable improvements in the region.
