A double mission

At the beginning of 2025, Petra Roser, intensive care nurse at St. Josef's Hospital of the Artemed Clinics in Freiburg, and Gunther Roser, electrician, traveled to Tanzania for the first time to the St. Walburg’s Hospital in Nyangao.

Petra Roser contributed her expertise to the introduction and structuring of processes relating to the use of a new ventilator. Through her daily work in the intensive care unit, she was able to support the Tanzanian team in their day-to-day work and encourage them to optimize hygiene processes. Her preparatory Kiswahili language courses via an online app made it much easier for her to communicate on site. Acceptance within the team was significantly boosted by her language skills. Her expertise in handling the customs defibrillator was particularly appreciated. As this is rarely used, the local staff were extremely grateful for her detailed instruction and the establishment of a function check. This allowed many uncertainties to be eliminated and questions to be clarified, thereby relieving the Tanzanian colleagues' concerns about dealing with potentially dangerous tensions.

Gunther Roser supported the project with his technical expertise. He helped with the installation of the hot water solar system and the new washing machine(we reported.) He also lent a hand with the water issue, as the pump in one of the two hospital wells was no longer supplying water and had become wedged inside the well.

Such salvage work poses a particular challenge, not only because of the limited technical equipment, but also because of the stressful climatic conditions. Mr. Roser was also able to repair numerous pieces of hospital equipment and make further progress with the electrical supply to the emergency room and intensive care unit. However, the limited availability of tool materials, such as screws, made some maintenance work more difficult. To enable sustainable improvements, he drew up a list of urgently needed materials. The Artemed Stiftung is now working with St. Walburg’s Hospital to provide better equipment for the maintenance department.

We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Roser for their medical and technical support - a cooperation that is essential for the success of our Tanzania project. Support our Tanzania project with a donation so that urgently needed tools and materials can be purchased for St. Walburg’s Hospital !
