World Humanitarian Day

Almost 280 million people worldwide are dependent on aid. However, there are also 1.18 million humanitarian aid organizations around the world with countless helpers trying to alleviate the suffering of these people as best they can. Today is a day to raise awareness of the plight of civilians around the world and pay tribute to the humanitarian workers who often risk their own lives to help.

World Humanitarian Day was introduced by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008. It was officially celebrated for the first time in 2009. The date was chosen because on August 19, 2003, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mellothe, and twenty other people were killed in a bomb attack in Iraq.

In 2022, this day has a greater significance than ever before, as suffering and poverty have risen to a negative record this year. According to a study by Oxfam, almost half of the population currently lives below the poverty line of 5.50 dollars a day. It is feared that a further quarter of a billion people will be at risk of extreme poverty by the end of 2022. Countries such as Ethiopia, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan are particularly affected, MyanmarYemen and Afghanistan. However, this trend is not only affecting developing countries: many households in Central Europe and America are also struggling with rising food prices. The current global political situation and the coronavirus pandemic are the main reasons for this sad trend. Added to this is the climate crisis, which has led to prolonged droughts, fires and crop failures in many regions of the world this year.

Enormous financial efforts are needed to prevent the greatest suffering: the UN is calling for almost 36 billion euros this year to help the regions of the world that are most affected.

We can all only contribute a small part with our own resources - but many small parts add up to a big part in the end. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters.
